Many years I have been a fan of Loretta Lynn. I saw the movie with Sissy Spacek playing her and read everything I could about her but never read her book until now.
Coal Miner's Daughter was written by Loretta Lynn and George Vecsey. She began with she wanted the book written as she talked and not fancy it up. It was like sitting on a porch and listening to Loretta tell her story and become good friends.
Loretta Lynn was born in Butcher Hollow but the folks in KY call it Butcher Holler. Her mother, Clara, was part Cherokee Indian, something Loretta was very proud of and became an activist for. She was named after Loretta Young, something I have in common with her. I too was named after Loretta Young.
Her daddy, Ted Webb, worked hard in the coal mines and later it gave him black lung and he couldn't work any longer. They had to move to Wabash, Indiana so he could work in a factory and a cousin moved into their cabin in the hollow. He never got to see Loretta become famous since he died of black lung at the age of 53.
Loretta talked how she met Doo, (Oliver Vanetta "Doolittle' Lynn), and married him a month after they met when barely 15 years old. By the time she was 20 she had four little ones and just figured out where they were coming from. In all they had six children together. Sadly two passed away - Jack Benny by drowning at the age of 34 and Betty Sue of emphysema.
She tells about her start in music along with all the trials and heartache. Most of her songs were inspired by her life with Doo and women's issues with cheating, drinking, and men who treated their wives wrong. She was the first woman named, "Entertainer of the Year" and and has been bestowed award after award much to her surprise. She kept her down home personality and never let fame get to her.
I give this book five stars.
I'm really on the fence with this book. I don't know whether to give it four stars or three. I'm not going to give it five because of the ending chapters.
Jillian Flynn is an exceptional writer taking us through the lives of Nick and Amy Dunne from their beginning romance to their fifth wedding anniversary when she disappears. Chapters are "written" by Nick and Amy with Amy telling her diary what Nick has done or not done. Through the book you'll feel bad for Amy and with all the evidence, feel Nick just may have had a part in her disappearance.
You kind of guess towards the end but the twisted end leaves you speechless or ranting with statements like, "what the he**?"
I thought about it for a long time and either it's a good ending for karma to bite him or we may get a sequel out of it. Why not? Fifty Shades did and the book was so dang repetitious and predicable and it had two more put out.
I haven't seen the movie and not sure if I will unless it's close enough to the book. Then again I may find myself wound up knowing how the end is going to be.
